They may only be Freshmen but all of the players on this list are contributing to their team in some way. This list is obviously based more on potential than production on the field.
When you talk about potential, there's no better place to start than Virginia Tech's Kevin Jones. His 4.23 reported time may or may not be accurate
but the fact of the matter is that Jones is fast. Jones is definitely not the only RB in the class though. Though Jones is the most talented, the most productive date so far has been Texas' Cedric Benson. He isn't blazing but runs hard and is tough to bring down. Auburn's Carnell Williams has come in and picked up the offense very quickly and has been the go to guy for the Tigers. Miami's Frank Gore is stuck behind a lot of talent but when he has gotten his chance he has shown gamebreaking capabilities. The QB position isn't great but there are some potentialy exciting prospects. DJ Shockley is a Donovan McNabb clone. He has the potential to be the gem of this QB class. FSU's Adrian McPherson is a great athlete who should push Chris Rix for the starting job in a year. Others to watch are Bama's Brodie Croyle, Va Tech's Bryan Randall, Derek Anderson of Oregon, Matt Leinart of USC and Washington's Casey Paus. The WR class looks like it could be absolutely incredible. Washintgon's Reggie Williams and Michael Clayton are two Randy Moss-types. Williams may be one of the most physically talented WRs in college football. Clayton makes the tough grabs and just seems to make big plays. Big plays are what Georgia's Fred Gibson have been coming up with. He has been lighting it up of late. Due to injuries, FSU's Cro Thorpe has been thrust into the starting job and he has the athleticism to be the next great FSU WR in the Peter Warrick mold.
The offensive line has some good prospects in Ben Wilkerson of LSU and Blake Larsen of Iowa.
The defense has several prospects that are already making impact. Oklahoma's Tommie Harris has been an absolute monster in the middle. He performed very well against Nebraksa's Toniu Fonoti, a likely 1st round pick. Texas LB Derrick Johnson has used his incredible 4.4 speed to be a blitzing terror for the 'Horns. Michigan's Marlin Jackson and Arkansas' Ahamd Carroll are two corners who are playing lots as freshmen. Memphis' Derron Johnson has been turning heads with his play at safety.
Then there are those who are still waiting their turn. LSU's Marquise Hill is a 6'8 tackle who will no doubt become a force for the Tigers. Miami has a couple of good athletes in LB Leon Williams and CB Antrel Rolle. USC has a potential All-American tandem in DE Shaun Cody and LB Marvin Simmons and Michigan has a fabulous prospect in S Earnest Shazor.
